Get Movin' in Bermuda

No rental cars are allowed anywhere in Bermuda, so vacationers must rely on other modes of transportation. Fortunately, the options that are available are all government-regulated for safety and quality.

Taxis

Taxis are readily available at the airport, most hotels, and areas of tourism.  Cabs are metered with easy-to-understand rate tables, and drivers are friendly and knowledgeable.  Drivers even often consider themselves unofficial ambassadors of the island. A taxi with a blue card in the window indicates that the driver is certified as a tourism specialist with an extensive background in sightseeing.  Minivans are also available for larger groups who wish to tour the island.

Buses

Buses are a good choice for visitors on a budget, as well as for travelers who want to rub elbows with locals and experience Bermuda's customs and hospitality. The brightly-colored buses are easy to find, and multiple routes make it easy for passengers to choose which area to see on the way. However, you will not be allowed to board with luggage.

Ferries

Ferries are an integral part of Bermuda transportation, allowing riders to enjoy the temperate weather and lovely scenery while traversing the many bays. Vacationers often find that this is one of their favorite ways of getting around the island because it is inexpensive and tranquil.

Water Taxis

A new service, launched in 2013, is a water taxi owned and operated by one local resident named Ashley Simmons, with sponsorship from CableVision.  Simmons has combined the idea of ferry transport with the ease, personalized service, and direct route capability of a taxi, and created a service that allows tourists to call for a water taxi to any public or private dock in Hamilton, Dockyard, St. George's, and the Great Sound.  The service, known as Bermuda Water Taxi, runs daily from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and is $10 to $25(USD) depending upon the destination.

Bikes and Mopeds

For more independent jaunts, bikes and mopeds are a fun way to explore the gorgeous coastline and local flavor of the island's interior. Left-oriented roadways may take a bit of getting used to, but the lure of warm breezes can be difficult to resist.  Mopeds are actually immensely popular in Bermuda, so it is wise to reserve them in advance if your plan of action is to utilize one as your main source of transportation.
